First Edition Books How To Tell

The majority of booksellers and collectors want the true first edition - the edition of the book that supersedes all other editions chronologically - and sometimes detective work is required to identify the true first. Do some research on the publication of the title to determine when the book was first issued so you can compare the dates.

The confusion around first editions is illustrated by 1984 by George Orwell.

First edition books how to tell. The one that came first would be considered the true first edition If an initial print run of a first edition sells out and the publisher decides to produce a subsequent printing with the same typeset the book would be described as a first edition second printing Dont let this distinction slip by when evaluating older books. All three of these denote a first edition. The ABAA glossary is a master of understatement when it says Every printed book has.

When the second set of identical copies is printed at a later date these are known as a first edition second printing. On the other hand if substantial. If the initial print run of this first edition sells out and the publisher decides to produce a subsequent printing with the same typeset the book would be described as a first edition second printing.

The publisher must be listed as Bloomsbury at the bottom of the title page. If the publisher of the book has changed since it was first released the edition number is reset. Thats because first edition means different things to collectors and to publishers.

First editions from John Day Co. To shed a little more light the first time a publisher releases a new book all copies of that book that are printed without major changes can be considered a first edition. Uses a first edition statement.

No statement on books. The numeral 1 will be removed for a second printing. Beginning in 1958 stated First published in Great Britain in Year on first editions.

Trim size is given because Book Club editions are often smaller than trade editions. A true first edition of a book is the first time the text was published in the first printing run of the book. In 1928 began stating First printed 19 on copyright page of first editions and continued noting subsequent printings.

Prior to 1928 no statement on first editions. To a publisher a first edition is any copy of a book that was printed without significant changes from the initial printing. Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc.

First edition copies state First Edition on the copyright page and the number sequence will be 2 4 6 8 9 7 5 3. Black House is the exception. If the words first edition appear on the copyright page your book is considered by its publisher to be a first edition.

If a book reads something like 3 5 7 9 8 6 4 then your book is not part of the first printing the example above indicates a third printing cycle. Adam Blakeney Senior Specialist in Modern Literature at Peter Harrington explains how to identify first editions. Subsequent printings presumably noted.

If a 1 is present - in any sequence - its usually a sign that the book is a first edition. The first printing is the first batch of books printed from this first setting of type. For a small press this might be the only printing a book gets so all copies are first edition first printings.

However just because you see those words doesnt mean youve got a valuable book on your hands. To publishers a first edition is the first version of a book before changes are made forewords added afterwords added typos corrected whatever requires a new typeset. This will fluctuate depending on the publishing house but most publishers will designate that a book is a first edition on the copyright page.

This means there could technically be two or more first editions of the same book. Look for the words first edition. So if the publisher prints 5000 copies of a book they all sell and the publisher goes back to print more of the same version of the book.

Generally have no statement on first editions and no additional printings indicated on the copyright page though few publications may state First Published Month Year on first editions. In the 1970s the company began using a sequence of numbers on the last printed page with 1 present to indicate a first edition. Also Book Club edition.

Continued to identify subsequent printings. Prior to 1958 either no statement on first editions or stated First published Year but in both cases subsequent printings were noted. To be a first edition in either hard or soft cover there are four very important issue points all of which your book must have.

Subsequent editions might be published but they would include several added or retracted features. Look for the Words First Edition on the Copyright Page. Published only the books of Edgar Rice Burroughs.
